About

wifärt gallery is an online art gallery operating from Hackney, London.

The collection is composed entirely of drawings made by members of the public in exchange for access to a free wireless network in Dalston Square.

How it works

There is no building. Instead, there is a wireless network - FREE Hackney Wifi - broadcast across Dalston Square. When someone connects to it, instead of ticking a terms and conditions box, they are asked to draw a picture. That drawing is then analysed and assigned a formal title and curatorial note - no matter how bad it is - and published on wifartgallery.com.

Every single work - no matter how rushed, how abstract, how much it looks like something drawn by a child in under four seconds - is analysed and assigned a formal title and a curatorial note. A wonky circle becomes Compressed Geometry in Repose, 2026. A stick figure becomes a meditation on line, presence, and negative space. No work is exempt.

Programme

The gallery runs a rotating monthly theme, intended as a suggestion only. The current exhibition, The Threshold Between Presence and Absence, opened 1 June 2026. Patrons of the gallery are invited to vote on the theme each month.

Funding

wifärt gallery receives no public funding and is not affiliated with any institution. It is operated by Dan Berg, and all costs are covered by the generous support of wifärt gallery patrons.

On the pronunciation of wifärt

wifärt is pronounced whyf-art. It is a compound of wi-fi and art. Any resemblance to the word for flatulence is entirely coincidental and the gallery considers the matter closed.

The gallery operates as a safe and inclusive space. Staff should not be subjected to the deliberate mispronunciation of the gallery's name, or to sniggers, nudges, or knowing looks when it is spoken aloud. Any such incident will be reported to the police as a hate crime.
